In an apparent violation of Chinese regulations, a scheduled visit to Tibetan former businessman Dorje Tashi, 51, at Churshur Prison in Lhasa by his brother, Dorje Tsetan, was cancelled last-minute. This is despite all legal documentation being submitted and the visit arranged once month in advance, Tibet Watch sources confirm.

In order to secure the visit, Dorje Tsetan had waited at the prison for several days, but he was ultimately denied the right to see his brother, with sources telling Tibet Watch that Dorje Tashi was in solitary confinement for an unspecified infraction. Dorje Tsetan has described the denial of access to his brother as “unbearable”.

Formerly a successful Tibetan businessman and Communist Party member, Dorje Tashi, 51, was arrested in 2008 on charges that were allegedly fabricated by senior Party officials. Following his detention, he endured torture so severe that prison guards reportedly wept and attempted to shield him from interrogators sent from Beijing. His family and friends fear that his life is at risk.
